THE PATTERN STORY

DAPPLED SUNLIGHT

Sunlit is a large-scale floral pattern of cherry blossoms and branches. Inspired by Japanese woodblock prints, it captures the feeling of looking up through a blossoming tree, with light filtering gently through the petals. It’s part of the Suketchi collection - a series of designs exploring nature’s moods and shifting atmospheres. Sunlit reflects warmth, stillness, and quiet joy.

BALANCE AND RENEWAL

The design is built around the stylised five-petaled cherry blossom, a symbol of renewal in Japanese culture. Its flowing composition was shaped by sketching and refining, with a sense of structure drawn from the principles of Ikebana. Branches and blossoms are arranged organically - natural, yet deliberate - like sunlight scattered through leaves.

INSPIRATION & THE CREATIVE PROCESS

As with the rest of the collection, Sunlit was painted in reverse - the background sky is inked in, while the blossoms and branches remain the untouched paper beneath. This gives the pattern a soft, layered feel, like dappled light across a surface. The finished design was painted by hand, following a composition finessed using an iPad and photoshop.

COLOUR THAT GLOWS

Sunlit responds beautifully to colour. Wallpaper shades include Raindrop, a fresh spring blue; Shadow, a neutral off-white; Mori, a soft olive-brown; and a romantic pink-mauve. For fabric, the design is reduced in scale and printed on linen in tones like Sora, a crisp sky blue; a deep plummy pink; a warm mustard yellow; and a soft off-white that sits easily in any scheme.

Sunlit is a pattern that brings light into a room. It speaks of peaceful afternoons, open skies, and the simple pleasure of being surrounded by nature. With its hand-painted texture and soft movement, it offers a gentle, uplifting presence — an invitation to pause, look up, and enjoy the moment.
